Job Description
We are seeking a Senior Look Development Artist with a strong focus on character work to help deliver high-quality, production-ready assets across our projects.
You will specialise in creating believable skin textures, hair, fur and photoreal material responses that remain consistent and convincing under a wide range of lighting conditions and camera angles. Working closely with Modelling, Groom, Lighting, Creature and Compositing teams, you will leverage scan data, texture maps, and attribute-driven workflows to produce refined shaders and materials that meet film-quality standards within our established pipelines.
This position will be in the Adelaide studio.
Key Responsibilities
- Create and refine high quality character textures and shaders (skin, hair, eyes) for integration into the lighting pipeline.
- Execute look development across multiple shots, ensuring consistency and realism.
- Troubleshoot issues related to shading, textures, grooms, and rendering Validate work using lighting rigs and basic compositing techniques to ensure integration into shots.
- Collaborate closely with Texture, Groom, Creature, Lighting, Environment and Compositing teams.
- Follow pipeline standards, colour workflows and handover requirements.
- Manage tasks effectively, respond to feedback, and meet deadlines.
- Communicate progress, blockers and risks clearly to the team.
- Mentor junior artists and contribute to collective problem-solving and knowledge sharing.
- Experience establishing or improving lookdev standards, templates or shared material libraries.
- Comfort working under tight production schedules and managing multiple concurrent assets/shots.
- Ability to interpret and translate art direction/concept art into technical solutions.
Qualifications
- Proven experience with a strong portfolio showing photoreal skin, hair, fur and eye shading techniques.
- A deep understanding of real-world material properties including skin response, light transport and optical behaviour using various renderers.
- High proficiency in Houdini and Arnold.
- Knowledge of subsurface scattering models, microfacet theory and physically based workflows
- Experience with Katana.
- Knowledge of USD and Solaris workflows also an advantage.
- Proficiency in Mari and Adobe Substance Designer and Painter.
- Experience with OSL is highly regarded.
- Strong time management, communication and collaboration skills.
